The Deck Saga

Since we've been here, we've had trouble figuring out what to do with the deck on the back of our house. The deck has held the original building permit on our house open for the last 7 years because it has never been completed. After getting a few professional opinions, we decided our best option was to start over. So, I reluctantly kissed all of my bathroom remodeling money good-bye and Matt started to tear down the deck. He spent several days taking all of the Trex off so we could reuse it, but it only took about 45 minutes to tear down the framing. Our posts are still standing because we plan to reuse them and finish the brick.

One of the main reasons we decided to start over is that we were afraid we had water issues because the deck was never properly flashed. This was definitely confirmed by the state of the sheeting under the ledger boards on our bays. The ledger just fell off because the sheeting was so rotted. Hopefully the rot doesn't go beyond the sheeting.

The good news is that in a few weeks we should have a useable deck. One that our kids can actually go out on. One that has stairs from the yard so we can use our kitchen doors to go outside! One that will, hopefully, be so spectacular I'll forget all about missed opportunities to remodel bathrooms.

Your house is looking so so fabulous with all your painting and remodeling. You are seriously talented. I have ZERO talent in that area. So, get on a plane and tell me what colors to paint what rooms. I got permission to paint so dang it, I am going to. Love the pink room, and the light blue walls. Beautiful!
